For many college graduates, commencement marks the end of years’ worth of hard work. It’s a chance to walk across a stage, celebrate with loved ones, and reflect on the journey that made the moment possible.
For Rhiannon Wilson, HR Coordinator at Ingleside at King Farm, that celebratory moment came not in front of all of her classmates and professors, but in front of the community she works with.
Despite having proudly earned her college degree, Rhiannon was unable to attend her graduation. Hearing that, the Ingleside community rallied together to give her the moment she deserved. During Ingleside at King Farm’s Signature Event, a celebration honoring scholarship recipients whose educational journeys have been supported through the Westminster Ingleside Foundation, residents, associates, and donors came together to celebrate.
As she walked across the stage in cap and gown, her 12-year-old son, Martez, watched from the audience, witnessing a milestone that represented years of perseverance, sacrifice, and determination.
Supporting Career Growth Through Resident-funded Scholarships
As a first-generation college graduate, Rhiannon’s path to earning her degree was anything but traditional. Juggling classes with the responsibilities of motherhood while building a career required resilience and an unwavering belief that her sacrifices would one day pay off.
Throughout that journey, Ingleside’s Westminster Foundation helped make continuing her education possible, awarding the dedicated employee with eight scholarships, each helping to ease the financial burden of tuition and giving her the freedom to focus on earning her degree.
“The scholarship fund over the years has been one of the largest impacts in continuing my educational journey,” Rhiannon shared. “The fund took away the fear of, ‘How will I pay for school and raise my son?’ With that burden finally lifted, I could focus on being a student for the first time in a very long time.”
Stories like Rhiannon’s are one of the many reasons why the Westminster Ingleside Foundation exists. Through the generosity of Ingleside Residents and donors, the scholarship program provides tuition assistance and educational support to Ingleside staff pursuing college degrees and professional certifications — opening doors to career advancement while strengthening the senior living communities they serve each day.
During the ceremony, Faye Liang, an Ingleside at King Farm resident, presented Rhiannon with her First-Generation sash from Columbia College of Missouri and, perhaps more importantly, an extremely proud hug, reflecting the unique relationships that define the culture across Ingleside’s communities. Residents don’t just witness the success stories of employees; they too become part of them.
A Lesson in Perseverance for the Next Generation
Although walking across the stage was meaningful, the true highlight for Rhiannon was seeing her 12-year-old son in the audience.
“This was a moment that was beyond special forthe both of us,” she shared. “He has walked my school path alongside me and has witnessed the sleepless nights, me doing homework on the sidelines of his football games, so this is as much a win for him as it is for me.”
She hopes the experience leaves him with a lesson he’ll never forget.
“I hope this moment shows him why Mom worked so hard and that anything you want is possible when you believe in yourself.”
