Scholarship Recipients

IRIS

Iris Thompson-Pelham, a certified nursing assistant at Ingleside at Rock Creek (IRC) for over three years, received a scholarship through the Employee Scholarship and Citizenship Program. Originally from Sierra Leone, West Africa, Iris came to the U.S. in October 2017 and won the Diversity Visa lottery program (DV). She attended the Academy of Hope, where she obtained her GED and nursing assistance certificate. In her role, she supports residents, assisting them with their daily activities and escorting them when they have doctors’ appointments. “What I enjoy most about working at IRC is the incredible sense of purpose I feel daily,” explained Thompson-Pelham. “Knowing that my work contributes to helping individuals rebuild their lives is incredibly rewarding. I also appreciate the collaborative culture and the opportunities for continuous learning and growth within the organization.” She applied for a scholarship to grow personally and professionally. “The program offers an incredible opportunity to pursue educational goals that will allow me to make an even greater impact within IRC and in the community, I serve,” said Iris. “I was overjoyed and incredibly grateful when I learned I had been awarded the scholarship. It felt like a validation of all the hard work I’ve put into my personal and professional growth. Knowing that IRC and its donors believe in me was humbling and motivating.” Iris is thankful for the donors who made this opportunity possible for her. “Your generosity is not just an investment in me, but also the broader mission of IRC. Because of your support, I can pursue citizenship goals that will allow me to grow and make a greater impact in the lives of others.”

WALTER

Walter Guzman, Westminster at Lake Ridge’s food operations manager, couldn’t be more thankful for being awarded the Kreider Professional Development Award. This endowment was established in 2015 by residents, Larry and Glea Kreider, and offers continuing education scholarships to employees. Guzman began his career as a dining server at a retirement community when he was 15 years old. For more than nine years, he has had the opportunity to hold various positions within dining services. “Initially, it was just a job, and I was focused on making a living,” said Guzman. “However, after working in a senior living community, I developed a true passion for working with the residents. I find great fulfillment in helping others and making their days better. It’s become something I genuinely love to do.” Receiving the Kreider Fund award to help obtain U.S. citizenship means So much to Guzman. “It represents not only the sacrifices I made, but also a great blessing that I deeply appreciate,” added Guzman. “My family and I will always be thankful for the opportunity it provided.” What Guzman enjoys most about working at WLR is the care and appreciation the residents show towards the staff. “The sense of community here is something I truly value—we all work together, and that teamwork is something I take great pride in.”

EMILEE

For Emilee LaRose, music isn’t just an art—it’s a tool for healing, connection, and self-expression. As a licensed and board-certified music therapist at Ingleside at King Farm, she supports residents through individual and group therapy sessions, helping them find comfort, autonomy, and meaningful engagement through music. With a degree in Music Therapy from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, Emilee has always been drawn to neurologic music therapy (NMT) a specialized field that uses music to assist with cognitive, motor, and speech rehabilitation. Thanks to the Ingleside at King Farm Employee Education and Citizenship Fund, she recently completed training at the International Neurologic Music Therapy Training Institute, earning her NMT credentials. “Earning my NMT credential has been a goal since I began my studies,” Emilee shares. “I’m passionate about advocating for comprehensive music therapy programs in senior care, and this certification allows me to expand my scope of practice.” Beyond her current role, Emilee is committed to lifelong learning. She plans to continue her education by pursuing a certification in Hospice and Palliative Care Music Therapy, focusing on grief, loss, and end-of-life support. With every session, Emilee brings her deep knowledge, compassion, and dedication to the Ingleside community—helping residents find joy, healing, and connection through music.
