Are you ready to usher winter out the door? This year presented additional challenges and many of us enjoyed turning the calendar to welcome spring.
Even if the weather needs a little more time to catch up, there still is something special about knowing that warmer days are ahead.
Spring has a way of making us feel better. What may also lift your spirit is bringing some of that light and brightness into your home.
Everyone has their own favorite tricks to use when it’s time to refresh their home for spring but most designers will tell you that getting rid of any extra clutter is key. Second is to add a little spring cleaning to your to-do list. Only then are you really ready to decorate.
Spring decorating tips
Here are 10 tips to spruce up your home with spring:
Say goodbye to the darker colors and fabrics of winter and hello to the blues, greens, whites and yellows of spring. Consider replacing heavy fabrics with cotton or linen and complement pillows and throws using the same design but different colors.
Don’t overlook your sanctuary room when it comes time to welcome in the new season. It’s a perfect time to replace your heavier bedding with the brightness and lightness of spring. Slipping into crisp white sheets almost guarantees a happy feeling. Or go with colorful patterns.
Purchase vases in different shapes and colors and bring in the flowers. Place a setting on your dining table, coffee and bedside tables. For a great look, try different containers but fill with the same type of blooms. Or go in the opposite direction.
Walk through your home and consider what objects you could add or replace for a refreshing new look. Think about your knick knacks, photo frame colors and even your artwork. Often it’s the small changes that make all the difference.
If you haven’t already, adding a large mirror to a room automatically reflects back brightness as well as all of your wonderful colors and lights. Of course, it will also make the room appear larger. Create a focal point with a large mirror and sconces on either side. Or consider creating a gallery wall with several smaller frames.
If you’re lucky enough to live where there is plenty of natural light flooding into your home, consider bringing in greenery. The benefits include not only introducing nature, but they also add a pop of color. Choose textured pots or simple glass containers and consider a grouping if you have the right space.
Whether you are decorating your bathroom or the guest powder room, it’s a perfect time to swap out your bath and hand towels. Bright white towels with an accent color can make a bold statement. Add fresh flowers to further honor springtime. And if you haven’t yet, it’s also a great time to declutter.
You may not have another set of dishes that you use for warmer weather but you can always switch your tablecloths, mats and napkins with the lighter and brighter colors. Replace your kitchen towels with simple designs or one with signs of spring.
After checking with your community for any guidelines, consider hanging a wreath with fresh or faux flowers on your door. You may also want to change out your door mat for a brighter way to welcome you home. Depending on your setting, you may be able to add a plant or pot of flowers.
Add a small sitting area with chairs and side table, or a small outdoor table for that morning cup of coffee. Including a burst of color with your seat cushions or pillows will brighten up the space, even on cloudy days. When the weather permits, consider a container garden with alternating shapes, colors and heights.
Use lemons and limes as accents in your kitchen. Place in clear bowls or brightly colored containers to get the full effect. Add a few sprigs of greenery to really set off the colors.
Create a large tray with your favorite vase of flowers, summer reading books, shells and any other objects that speak of warm weather and spring. Place in the kitchen or on the coffee table.
Blues and whites are classic colors for spring and summer. If you have a collection of vases, bowls, decorative plates or other containers, try different arrangements for the perfect focal setting. This works really well in your kitchen or entry area.
